An outcome of the Dialogue on Race 2022 Summer Summit

In May 2022, the Youngkin administration released a report, “Our Commitment to Virginians: High Expectations and Excellence for All Students.” On August 27, 2022 the Montgomery County, VA Dialogue on Race convened over 150 local citizens to examine and critique the set of principles for their impact on public education, a fundamental community-based asset.

Public education has been a focus issue of the Dialogue on Race for the past ten years. We met in small groups like this one, each to study one of the principles from the report, using a uniform set of guiding questions, to examine the issues raised.

Although many of our community participants considered the document vague and in need of operational statements, the titles of the principles in the Governor’s plan were clear. Groups found that some of the Governor’s policies contradict some of the principles stated in the document. This we found deeply concerning.

At the Friday, October 14, 2022 Community Briefing, we will focus on each of the principles reviewed at the Summer Summit. Come join us. Your presence will convey how important our concerns are to the future of our children’s public education.
