Taking Stock and Moving On

The 2024 Winter Summit was held on January 27, 2024 at the Christiansburg Middle School cafeteria space. 150 people pre-registered for the Winter Summit, and more than 130 showed up to spend the day working in small groups on key issues of education and law enforcement. The Roanoke Times covered the event, with both reporter Mike Gangloff and Matt photographer Gentry spending the day with us.

With the theme “Taking Stock: Moving On,” the Winter Summit was organized to emphasize small group table conversations and dialogue. By sharing experiences, perspectives and points of view, community develops the capacity to do the difficult, arduous work of combating systemic, cultural racism.

A light lunch was served complements of The Community Group of Montgomery County and the New Mountain Climbers Giving Circle between the morning and afternoon dialogue sessions.

Coffee with Cops

Officers from from Blacksburg, Christiansburg, Montgomery County and Virginia Tech police departments met for coffee with community members over coffee donated by the Roanoke Street Starbucks in Christiansburg. Thank you Starbucks! The Coffee With Cops hour provides an opportunity for law enforcement officers and other community members to meet, share perspectives, and get to know one another in a fuller, more open way.

Table Groups

Small group dialogue sessions at tables of eight or more focused on data presented by the Education and Law Enforcement Committees. Judy Barylske and members of the DOR Education Issue Group designed and planned the table conversation process, and trained the facilitator volunteers. With twenty tables working together, the Winter Summit produced recommendations and ideas about how to close gaps and overcome obstacles caused by systemic racism and Jim Crow culture. The rich variety of voices from across Montgomery County included leaders, teachers, longtime community volunteers, and students from Radford University, Virginia Tech and New River Community College.
