Law Enforcement & Education
Digging Into the Data, Getting the Facts, Overcoming Obstacles, Taking Action
On Saturday, January 25, 2025, the Dialogue on Race Winter Summit met in-person at the Christiansburg Middle School to consider data presented by the Law Enforcement and Education Issue Groups. More than 100 people attended. We had a good turnout for the 9-10 am Coffee with Cops segment, an opportunity to informally get to know and talk with local law enforcement officers, for which the Christiansburg Police Department provided the coffee.
The morning program was held in the auditorium where speaker Wornie Reed presented our law enforcement data. People were then invited to stay for a boxed lunch prepared by Hethwood Market in Blacksburg, VA, courtesy of the town of Blacksburg and Montgomery County, longtime sponsors of the Dialogue on Race. After lunch, participants focused on education data of Black and White students for Montgomery County Public Schools. In small table groups, they reviewed reading and mathematics SOL performance data, chronic absenteeism, and suspension data.
Education Issue Group Winter Summit Presentation
The Education Issue Group presentation provided an opportunity for summit participations to review the importance of equity indicators by providing a glimpse of SOL data, attendance data, and absenteeism data for our Black and White students in Montgomery County Public Schools. Such indicators and measures highlighted disparities for these students and the need for improvements.
